Announcements and Suggestion Box (OLD)

There is now a Wiki page that summarizes a lot of the information that has appeared here. See the link on the side. Please look there before you post a "Has anyone heard form X" question.

The current threads will remain active until AEA then I will start new threads for all of the categories and archive the current ones.

This post will always be moved to the top, and serves as the suggestion box for the site. I don't read most of the threads so if you want to bring something to my attention post it here. Report any bad manners here or to my email. I will be very lenient as to what I allow but personal attacks and stuff that is WAY out of line will be deleted. Also any information that is proven false and intentionally misleading will be deleted unless corrected on the blog.

Need a seperate IO heading please.

Anonymous said...

Looks like no one is revealing info about schools they got because that might identify him/her. I suggest we disaggregate the data at the individual level. Tatonnement, can you please put up a table with school names, where everyone can just indicate anonymously if they got a call, preferably with the area?

Anonymous said...

Some people (especially in IO) might be getting calls from b-schools with lots of departments inside, so if the table ever gets put up we should all indicate somewhere which department called (if it was not econ).

Also, while it does seem like nobody wants to reveal what schools they got, it seems like a pretty far stretched theory that recruitment committees will come here to try to figure out who the people are, and this will somehow adversely affect posters' chances. However tenured professors do have a lot of time on their hands :)

Anonymous said...

suppose a person has few interviews and gets no flyouts. Is the market 'over' for that person? or will some schools enter at that stage?

This job market game is pretty stressful. And I bet getting tenure is not rosy either...

Anonymous said...

Applied micro too broad for those of us in the obvious subfields (labor, devo, empirical IO, etc).

Anonymous said...

Can you please include a development economics subfield?

Anonymous said...

Hey Tatonnement,
What do you mean by "Money Jobs"? Monetary Economics? Or is that included as a subfield of Macro?
Thanks

Anonymous said...

I am not Ben Bernanke, but I have just managed to post a comment under his name. This is a serious problem. People could post things under other candidates' names and put very false or damaging information out there. You had better do something to prevent this, or this page is going to be a disaster. Maybe you could as moderator remove all comments that are not anonymous.

Tatonnement said...

There are now heading for Labor, Public, Health and IO.

Money and Monetary are the same heading.

Development has its own heading too.

Anonymous said...

Moderator, some people seem to think that the "Money/Monetary" heading is to discuss the financial details of eventual offers that people get. Is that your idea?

Anonymous said...

I believe it is better to create headings by REGION rather than by fields, e.g., Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, Pacific, Canada, Europe, Rest of World.

I have checked most headings and I think people are not restricting themselves to

Anonymous said...

To complete:

I have checked most headings and I think people are not restricting themselves to comment about fields.

Anonymous said...

It appears that Applied Micro was not too broad at all: the sub-fields of labor, Io etc are redundant

Anonymous said...

Labor and IO are redundant??? Give me a break.

For me, the Money/Monetary heading IS redundant (there is a heading for Macro theory and another for micro applied, and TTBOMK monetary economics is subfield of macro

Anonymous said...

the "invisible hand" determines which sub-fields are redundant, and so far there are many with ZERO posts (including labor)

it is easy to see why the posts tend to concentrate under 4-5 main headings: there is often a 1 to 1 mapping between schools and job opening fields

Tatonnement said...

RE: Money, Public, Labor and Health post. I will give them a day and if they do not take off I will remove them, and let them fall into the residual categories.

I understand that there is a benefit to having everything in one place. That is why I originally had all the Applied/Empirical Micro under one heading. We will see what people want and I will adjust things accordingly.

Thanks for all the suggestions by the way.

Anonymous said...

thank YOU for setting this up.

Anonymous said...

Can we also have a place to talk about private sector Phd Econ jobs here? Or that is out of the question?

Tatonnement said...

Public, Labor and Health have been moved back to the Applied Micro heading. Seems thats they way folks like it.

I will add a heading for Private sector and Government Jobs.

Anonymous said...

how about financial economics?

Anonymous said...

I also think regional devision might serve better!

Anonymous said...

thank you!

Anonymous said...

What about removing the tracker you put? Or offering a rationale for it?

Tatonnement said...

Blogger Beta which is run by Google seems to add the Google Analytics tool. I have now disabled this feature.

Sorry about that.

For the record I am not on the market nor any committee, so I have no ulterior motives here. Just setting up a blog where I saw a need.

Tatonnement said...

I am not sure what you mean by regional division, or how it would help?

People would then have to look through the "Northeast Applied Micro" and "Southwest Applied Micro". I am not convinced this would be a good thing.

Maybe I don't understand what you are saying.

Anonymous said...

The blog is fine as it is, regional subcategories would generate unnecessary confusion

Right, because there's no way for people to put identifying information in their actual post.

By the way, I'm the real Ben Bernanke, and I'm royally pissed off that you posted under my name.

Tatonnement said...

Macro Theory has been combined with Applied Macro.

Tatonnement said...

Would people want a separate listing for "Teaching Schools" (Liberal Arts and Directional Schools) or is it best to keep those discussions under the subject listing?

Anonymous said...

For a lot of the information, it seems that a wiki format would be more useful, i.e. a table of what jobs have already requested interviews, scheduled flyouts, etc. For example:

http://cdm.berkeley.edu/doku.php?id=astrophysicsjobs

Anonymous said...

Yes,but you must be involved in this job market thing in some aspect, otherwise you would not have seen the need....

Anonymous said...

Can you add a section for public policy schools? Lots of economists consider these jobs as well - and there is already a blog and status list of searches - see http://www.wikihost.org/wikis/academe/wiki/public_policy

Thanks!

Anonymous said...

As information becomes clarified, I encourage you to add it to the tables at this wiki.

http://www.bluwiki.com/go/Econjobmarket

Anonymous said...

Could we have a separate "special topic" for signals please?

Tatonnement said...

I think the Wiki idea is great. I thought about that myself. However when the heat gets high after AEA, I think there could be problems. That said I hope it works out.

I will put a link for it on the main page.

I will add the special topic and the Public Policy sections soon.

Anonymous said...

I would encourage everyone to update the wiki at

http://www.bluwiki.com/go/Econjobmarket

It looks like the best way to aggregate all of the information on interviews.

At first glance, updating the information may seem difficult, but it's actually pretty easy.

SPecial TOpics request: Demand Side Rumors.

Does anyone have any information about the selection process that they can share? What's the average number of applicants received for different fields? How does it vary by the quality of the school? WHat's the average number of invitations made?

Tatonnement said...

12:19 I would rather keep these discussions under their respective categories. If it is just a general discussion then the general job market post should work.

Anonymous said...

That Wiki is recording everyone who post I.P. address and the manager can see where everyone who visits is coming from! Be aware!

Tatonnement said...

I am not sure if the Wiki tracks IP's or not.

The blog DOES NOT track any information about visitors or posters. Your privacy is safe here.

Anonymous said...

Can anyone explain the anonymouse feature on the wiki? It says it hides the IP address?

Anonymous said...

if you go to the wiki and click on "History", you can see the IP address of everyone who has made changes to the site, and what changes they have made. You can match the IP address to a city, state by using any one of IP lookup websites. Enjoy-

Anonymous said...

to make it explicit, the IP addresses are on this link:
http://www.bluwiki.com/index.php?title=Econjobmarket&action=history.

Anonymous said...

Idea: Why not add a column to the wiki that lists the names/dates of people being flown out by various schools? This is similar to the Poli Sci IR blog, which does the same. I'd offer to this but (1) I am technically incompetent, and (2) I am unfortunately overwhelmed with a non-job market related deadline.

Anonymous said...

Well I guess that effectively kills off the Wiki.

Anonymous said...

Doesn't this anonymouse thing listed on the front page of the wiki mask one's IP? It claims to, anyhow. The FAQ of the anonymouse page says something about it scrambling the IP address for the receiver/target? Thus, I think if you use that to post, your IP won't show. Can someone else comment - preferably whoever it was who added that to the page?

Anonymous said...

Just heard from Babson College. Got rejected. They said they had 295 applicants, though! Man, I can imagine how much that job sucks going through 300 applicants for only 30-40 people. I'm thankful I have the ones I have - don't know how I managed to get past the others in some of them.

Anonymous said...

Not sure. I just edited the wiki using anonymouse, then looked up my IP address. It's showing I'm from the Netherlands, which is just slightly off target (by about 50,000 miles or however far it is to there from here). So I think anonymouse may do what the wiki page says, and let you edit without leaving a trace.

Anonymous said...

Now what do we do when people start fucking with the table. You can't ban their IP if they are using a proxy.

Anonymous said...

I ave a question about the signals. We are on the buyer side of the market but do not know if we have recieved signals or not. Since we are among the lower tiered schools, I doubt we are the first choice of many, unless there was ageographic preference. Would we have been notified if we received no signals?

Anonymous said...

I think it has already happened. Look at some of the dates. They can't be right.

Tatonnement said...

4:54 I am not sure what you mean. Try asking under the signals SPECIAL TOPIC and see if anyone has an answer.

Anonymous said...

So, now there are future dates on the wiki table. Does this mean the recruiting people are telling us their schedule, or somebody is making fun of us?

Anonymous said...

Tatonnement,thanks for this fun blog.
As a jm candidate I find it even relaxing ...

Can you tell us if you are a jm candidate, a student in, like, second year with nothing to do as we were once, or a prof. (I really really really think this last one is my bet ) ? Anyway TANKS!

Tatonnement said...

I think it is best for the site and myself that I stay anonymous. I don't want to give too much away about myself for fear of being outed.

I will say that I am not on the market, or on any search committee.

Anonymous said...

Can someone PLEASE fix the Wiki. There was a string of vandalism yesterday around 4:00PM. I can't figure out how to roll back to the last "good" version.

Anonymous said...

OK I did some repair work on the Wiki. There was no way to "roll-back" to a previous version, but I think I got most of the obvious vandalism fixed. What the fuck is with people messing with this table. We are all in this together people.

Anonymous said...

I'll also be monitoring the wiki for vandalism. You can create an account on the wiki (zero personal info required) so that your ip address is not publicly displayed.

Anonymous said...

The privacy note on the wiki had been updated.

Privacy note: Visitors should create an account before updating the wiki. This will allow you to post under a pseudonym. No personal information is required to create an account. Changing the wiki in this manner maintains your anonymity in almost all cases. See this page [link is on the wiki] for more info. This wiki tracks the IP addresses of visitors who make changes to the page (even anonymous visitors) who do not have an account or who have an account and have not logged in. These IP addresses can easily be traced to your ISP and geographic location. Keep that in mind. You can also edit this wiki without a trace if you use an anonymizer like Anonymouse.

Anonymous said...

I think we will see much more of this type of shenanigans post-AEA

Anonymous said...

It is obvious that all the US departments have made most of their calls by now, if not all of them. Yet, it is not as clear for international positions, since many of them have not stated clearly whether they are interviewing in Chicago. International positions tend not to make it to wiki because of lower demand. How about opening a separate heading for international positions here?

Anonymous said...

I would like to suggest opening a new thread entitled, "Questions to the Demand-Side" where we can anonymously query departments. For instance, I want to know target departments' opinions about things, but would rather not ask them as myself. An anonymous exchange from supply to demand could mitigate some of the worries people may have about querying as themselves (ie, looking stupid, saying something wrong, etc.).

Tatonnement said...

12:05,
I will give it a shot but I am not sure if you will have many schools willing to say much.

Anonymous said...

It is annoying to have to re-open all of the threads just to see if there are new comments posted. If it is not too much work, could you each day move threads to the top that have new comments ? Then the date on the thread would be for the most recent comment rather than when it was started. Thanks!

Anonymous said...

12:55 - I suspect that is very difficult to do.

Tatonnement said...

12:55,
That would actually be a bit of work. If there was a way to automate it I would. Otherwise you will just have to keep checking each post.

Sorry.

Anonymous said...

Suggestion: Post a separate post-doc entry. Some of the postdocs have deadlines that are not due after the primary market clears anyway, so it may still be useful to have a separate entry.

Tatonnement said...

Post-Doc category has been added.
