How about a new section of immediate reactions from the meetings--things that I didn't read (or didn't pay enough attention to) in the Harvard/Berkeley/Stanford/Cawley "how to do the job market" handouts?
e.g. get there a day early so you can figure out how to get from hotel to hotel, where the lobby is, where the rooms are. Also, 50% of my interviews hadn't posted room information next to their disclosure codes by 7PM the night before, including my first morning interview. So it's good to have a mobile phone number or other backup contact so you can get there on time anyway.
Had mostly good interviews - ranging from really good interviews, to decent but I didn't like the program. One interview at a great school (too good for me) made me realize that I shouldn't try to illustrate a point I make in my paper by referencing a movie, though. What was I thinking?
I think this is the wrong thread, but why was the movie thing bad? too cutesie? or the profs were so culturally illiterate that the reference made no sense to them?
A few things. First, I couldn't remember the name of the movie, but began the anecdote thinking I knew the name. So I spent more time going, "remember that movie? What was it called? It was about a guy and a girl..." And then secondly, I could see immediately that it wasn't working, and dropped it, which made it seem even more strange.
8:18 - for the most part, it was very scripted, but I made a gamble at one point to try something different. Strangely, three weeks earlier, I had thought of that movie, and it gave me an idea for research. But I thought the movie was Neal Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs and was corrected by my major adviser that it was something else. That experience alone should've taught me not to bring up the movie (but maybe the research idea) in interviews, because of course when I went to retrieve the name of the movie from my memory, all I could remember was "it's not Brighton Beach Memoirs."
This site seems to be populated with applied micro people. Are there any macro people out there? Is it that this blog is known only to applied micro people or is it that macro people are shy? The big question is: are macro people updating the wiki?
I have a suggestion. It would be great if the links on the main page to the different threads had something like "last updated x hours and y minutes ago" written next to them. This would save me from having to either (a) memorize how many comments are in each thread at any time, or (b) open each thread when I visit the site, only to find there are no new comments.
I know of at least one person who had heard from the Board of Governors, but the rumor is that it takes them some time to process and schedule all their fly-outs.
Talk about way out of line, there is no excuse for listing "Mary Rosh" as having a fly-out anywhere. I've deleted it twice, but there's no reason for this.
I am not sure if there is a relationship between how well you did in the ASSA interviews and whether you get a flyout.
Both my best and worst interviews turned into flyouts, whereas those schools with which I interviewed reasonably well seem to have invited other candidates for campus visits.
I have completed my flyouts - now I am waiting for a final decision, or even more invitations for campus visits.
I will take anything - right now, it's too hard to concentrate on work :)
I think we need a section about "compensation package" and bargaining. I have one offer at hand and no clue if it is OK or how much I can push it (I expect to have a second offer but not sure). What do you think?
If somebody in the future asked you for an advice about the job market what would you say?
Personally, there is no advice at all. Luck. Luck Luck
The market is a crazy one. Highly unpredictable
All my flyouts went extremely great however they chose another candidate. All the Cowley stuff about what to say during an interview and other stuff are none sence.
During the application process: 1) great reference letter 2) interesting job market paper 3) good teaching evaluations (if applying to a teaching school)
During the ASSA meeting: 1) enthusiasm 2) prior institutional knowledge (which makes it easier to gel with the interviewers)
During campus visits: 1) research seminar 2) teaching demonstration (if applicable) 3) social skills
In response to the discussions in another thread about using a message board system rather than this blog:
I actually though about the form of this forum a good bit before I set it up. I have used different types of discussion groups for many years (all the way back to the old usenet days). However after looking at the message board there was really no way to make it work well for our purposes here.
In general the poster on the other thread was right, most of the benefits of the message board go away when you realize no one will want to register an account. What constitutes a “new comment” is different for each visitor depending on when they visited last and what threads they read. The only way the board could know this is if you had a registered account. I know people could register with fake email addresses, but I thought that added cost would scare folks off. At the end of the day the utility of this type of thing is monotonically (exponentially?) increasing in the number of visitors. So I wanted as few things in the way of people reading and posting anonymously.
Once you realize that the benefits of a message board go away without registration. The downside comes into play. Without the “new comments” function it takes MUCH longer to go through a message board than it does a blog like this. It takes multiple clicks to get to the last post. This puts it all on one page.
All that being said if there is something that would work out there that I have not run across I am all ears. Also hopefully blogger will update the comments scripts many have suggested I use, so that they work with the “new blogger”.
there are message boards where you don't have to register to post. the registration issue is separate from the message board vs blog issue. even if you don't register, a message board can still tell you when the latest post was added on each thread. you could probably design one that tells you what's new since your last visit, just by depositing a cookie on your computer.
Personally I hate the "recent post at the top" style. You end up reading the conversation backwards or having to scroll down and then read up the page.
re 4:02PM, you can do anonymous posting only under the first set of topics: "Firefox Support." It says, "Anonymous/guest posting allowed." I tried it, it works.
In general, everyone uses the same vBulletin software to set up their discussion boards, and it's an option that the administrator can set to allow or disallow anonymous posting

I could imagine either being true.

improv guy: gounds like you did take the "do not sound scripted" advice a little too literally!

ouch! well, you gotta take chances in this life. what the hell.
i was 15 minutes late for my HBS interview. crap.
How about posting when an institution calls for a flyout?
How to ensure that people post when they get flyouts?
If people could take their area and try to compile any info that appears into the WIKI.
A little monitoring will help discourage vandalism. There have already been cases of names being removed and things messed with.
This site seems to be populated with applied micro people. Are there any macro people out there? Is it that this blog is known only to applied micro people or is it that macro people are shy? The big question is: are macro people updating the wiki?
I'm macro. Will update the wiki if/when info comes in. I would appreciate it if others would as well.

I suspect that 10:26's proposal is difficult to implement, but I think I have seen an option in a blog to show last comments first...
Instead of 10:26 proposal, I think that it's time to consolidate the threads... like: non-academic jobs, applied micro, non-applied micro :)
while i guess there should be more fields than AM and not AM, there seems to be no demand for it...
Has anybody heard from FED Board of Governors? Does anyone know when they start to fly out candidates? Thanks.
I know of at least one person who had heard from the Board of Governors, but the rumor is that it takes them some time to process and schedule all their fly-outs.
In addition to Reports from Interviews, can we create a section on Reports from Flyouts?
reports from flyouts? what for? nobody is even writing reports from interviews, who would actually write reports from flyouts?
There is a list of (mostly) job market talks at ASU here http://wpcarey.asu.edu/ecn/seminars.cfm
Talk about way out of line, there is no excuse for listing "Mary Rosh" as having a fly-out anywhere. I've deleted it twice, but there's no reason for this.
Oh I think there are reasons. Many, many reasons.
Can you add "recent comments" in the side bar menu?
1:03,
As far as I know there is no automated way for me to do this. If there is please let me know.
any reason why wisc-madison is not listed on the wiki?
"Recent comments in the sidebar"
http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=42522
I propose a new "Salary Rumors" or "Compensation package rumors". I know it's a topic some won't like to talk about but it might worth the shot.
I know there's a nice table in Cawley's paper but it may be interesting to see if the market is paying according to the expectations.
Also you can share successful negotiations strategies, etc. What do you think?
how much time after the offer is made I will most likely have to accept it?
Should the Wiki also include a final column for "Position Accepted"? This would give job seekers additional information before finalizing their plans.
i heard that in general you have 1 week to accept or reject an offer but you can ask for more time... 2 weeks total maybe?
Tatonnement: Just to reiterate - you can list the recent comments posted by following these directions.

Sorry 12:13 that code does not seem to work.

3:46pm - I completely agree.
Timeout occurred when attempting to edit. Appears to have caused an error in the wiki code. Still getting a timeout when attempting to correct.
Can we get a new section for discussing job offer relate matters? THanks.
The February JOE is up!
10:59 - man, that feb. JOE was pretty thin, I thought. Ugh. Sent out a postdoc app yesterday.
"10:59 - man, that feb. JOE was pretty thin, I thought. Ugh. Sent out a postdoc app yesterday."
You bet it was. Twas the movie equivalent of ghost town.

The section for compensation is up. I have been traveling and very busy, sorry it took so long.

8:14 - great letters of reference, interesting paper, and enthusiasm. in that order.
Advice?
I guess for the entire process: LUCK
During the application process:
1) great reference letter
2) interesting job market paper
3) good teaching evaluations (if applying to a teaching school)
During the ASSA meeting:
1) enthusiasm
2) prior institutional knowledge (which makes it easier to gel with the interviewers)
During campus visits:
1) research seminar
2) teaching demonstration (if applicable)
3) social skills
Having said that, you need LUCK at each stage.
Bitter, once again.

I agree about the whole registration thing.
It would be sufficient to list the date/time of the last post and/or to have the newest post at the *top* of the page.

@9:11 AM
Can you give us an example of a message board with the characteristics you are describing? Thanks.
I just started a wiki page to compile detailed offer and compensation information: http://www.bluwiki.com/go/Econjobmarket_offers
If there are columns to add or substract, feel free to edit it.
Personally I hate the "recent post at the top" style. You end up reading the conversation backwards or having to scroll down and then read up the page.
@10:53, try forums.mozillazine.org.
Uh, as far as I can tell that message board requires registration. I tried to post and it asked for a user name and password.
I think I have found a message board that will work. I will post it as a "Beta" in a few days and we will see how it works.
Here is the "Beta Board". You should not have to register and be able to post anonymously.
Take it for a spin:

Tatonnement - The message board works great. Thanks!
The forum works great! I updated the wiki to reflect this new resource.
OK. Well hearing no objections I will begin moving this whole operation over to the message board.
Does anyone see a downside to this?
All the current post will be archived here.
This discussion has moved to the new message board.
It is a better system and you can still post anonymously.
This link will take you to the correct thread:
