I heard from around the way that Duke moved..., so here is the general question this begs - do school setup thir interviews all at once (and thus if someone else has already heard from a place and you haven't, you are out of the running), or do they do things in waves?
I heard some schools move very fast to call candidates that the whole committee agrees initially to call...and then later call candidates that they agree later to call. So getting a later call could mean that you are a less obvious choice to the whole committee, or that they had not finished reading your file by the time of the first meeting.
I heard people on the recruiting committee at my school say that there weren't very many strong applied micro candidates... which may give some of us a better shot, unless we're competing with macro, theory, metrics, or international!
Can anyone address whether these schools have contacted anyone?

Yes, if someone knows how to do the wiki, please start it. I think it'd be useful to have a table of schools with dates, and possibly other information about the interviewee if possible. ALthough, with a wiki, can it be anonymous like this?
So, it sounds like the public health positions and the various medical schools are still in play. Or at least, no one has heard from them?
Has anyone heard from the CHiLD post-doc in TUrin, Italy?

I've created a wiki. It's not to replace this blog, but it will allow us to make tables with information. Gossip might go better here, and then what's learned can be changed there, in the form of tables or whatever is believed to be best.
http://www.bluwiki.com/go/Econjobmarket
Right now, it just has one heading for Applied Microeconomics. I took the most recent post and created a table around it. Expand this as you see fit. I encourage you to create anonymous accounts to edit it.

To whoever made the wiki, beautiful idea but small problem. It is linking to other parts of bluwiki.com that are not part of our wiki, e.g. check out finance link which is not related to finance job mkt. i think you need to make a subdomain within bluwiki or somthg.
Ah. Good point. Maybe it's most useful just to have one page with one table of information, and a column indicating the field. That would also address the next person's comment. I'll try that instead. THat way, we don't have to disambiguate (sp?) pages.
Feel free to change the columns of the table. For now, I've added a "Offer made to..." column. Maybe that is too much, though. At the least, maybe it's best just to have a single table and use this blog for the discussion.
Has anyone heard from University of LOuisville regarding the econometrics with health as a secondary field? I know that the IO position made invites last Thursday, but the heading on the wiki table show the other position with a "No" - meaning, as of yet, no one has reported receiving an interview from them.
ALso, can people start another thread about the impact their signal had on getting an interview? I was surprised that one of my signals didn't contact me. I got invites from much better programs than this one, too. Does anyone know, too, from the demand side how these signals were received? That is, what effect did they have on the search committee once they came in?
I used my signals on schools with which I thought I was a fairly good fit. I didn't get a call from either (they have contacted others), even thought I have 16 interviews.
Damn game theorists. Anyone else find that the signals helped?
Just heard from Babson College. Got rejected. They said they had 295 applicants, though! Man, I can imagine how much that job sucks going through 300 applicants for only 30-40 people. I'm thankful I have the ones I have - don't know how I managed to get past the others in some of them.

It may be some consolation to many of you sellers, that we received 400+ applications. If you spend two full days on a first pass, that averages out to just over 2 minutes per application.
Has anyone gotten an interview with Portland State? I heard that their job search was a sham as they have two visiting professors doing exactly what they advertised for.
Just got an email from Florida State indicating they had just begun looking through apps. Probably not the case, as I know others have already received invitations. But FYI.

December 20, 2006 4:50 AM ------------------------ True enough to me. I think their interviews are only for the sake of being "An equal opportunity-affirmative action employer".
Last year, Mills College had a similar situation. They announced in JOE for one tenure-track position, and there was a visitor who was doing the exact thing as the ad said, and he was also a spouse of a professor there. They didn't even go to Boston. But in January, they called some applicants, had job talks, and hired one extra person. Apparently they must've gotten budget for two hires.

I got wind from my committee that WVU has canceled one of its lines, not sure which.
Has anyone heard from Dartmouth Econ Department for AEA interviews yet?
I've heard from SUNY-Binghamton
I've got an AEA with SUNY-Oswego. Thats it so far.
I haven't got none, why does it take them so long to review applications?
By the way, is applied micro the same as empirical IO? Or does it include applied theory too?
i haven't heard from dartmouth either
I got a letter from Dartmouth which said they will send shortlists out on late December.
My packet was "requested" from Dartmouth, but alas I have heard nothing.
I know a person who has arranged an interview with Dartmouth.
Has anyone heard from Duke yet?
I heard from around the way that Duke moved..., so here is the general question this begs - do school setup thir interviews all at once (and thus if someone else has already heard from a place and you haven't, you are out of the running), or do they do things in waves?
I heard some schools move very fast to call candidates that the whole committee agrees initially to call...and then later call candidates that they agree later to call. So getting a later call could mean that you are a less obvious choice to the whole committee, or that they had not finished reading your file by the time of the first meeting.
Try to direct general questions about the market (not about a specific field or job) to the General Job Market Questions section.
Thanks
I heard people on the recruiting committee at my school say that there weren't very many strong applied micro candidates... which may give some of us a better shot, unless we're competing with macro, theory, metrics, or international!

I know somebody who heard from Santa Clara about a week ago.
Has anyone heard from UC Irvine as yet?
Yes, if someone knows how to do the wiki, please start it. I think it'd be useful to have a table of schools with dates, and possibly other information about the interviewee if possible. ALthough, with a wiki, can it be anonymous like this?
So, it sounds like the public health positions and the various medical schools are still in play. Or at least, no one has heard from them?
Has anyone heard from the CHiLD post-doc in TUrin, Italy?

Haven't heard anything about UCLA, UCSD, Wisconsin or Michigan here... either econ or bus.... anyone? (lol, hope not)
Michigan Econ and Bus both called around a week ago. So did UCLA Business and Econ.
I've heard from Wisconsin.

It is linking to other parts of bluwiki.com that are not part of our wiki, e.g. check out finance link which is not related to finance job mkt. i think you need to make a subdomain within bluwiki or somthg.
also re wiki: how about one big overall table. i have interviews that i am not sure what field they are in.
To December 18, 2006 11:57 PM
Ah.
Anyone hear from Michigan State for the education job?
Did anyone hear from Pepperdine University? Its in Malibu, CA.
anyone heard from U Maryland - Business School? if yes, when?
I heard from them (Logistics, Business and Public Policy group) on the morning of the 11th.
Many other disciplines have wiki lists in wikihost, which seems to allow more flexibility.
see http://www.wikihost.org/wikis/academe/wiki/start
There is a page for public policy, which are primarily applied econ jobs anyway.
Anyone else find that the signals helped?
anyone heard from washington u st louis?
Washington st louis -yes
signals: I got 1 out of 2
There is a SPECIAL TOPICS section for signals now
has anyone got an interview scheduled with georgetown econ?
11:51, was it olin or st louis econ?
anything from McGill or Baruch yet?
How about Nebraska??
baruch - yes
"baruch - yes" :
When did you hear from Baruch?
Did anyone hear from Western Ontario?
Just heard from Babson College. Got rejected. They said they had 295 applicants, though! Man, I can imagine how much that job sucks going through 300 applicants for only 30-40 people. I'm thankful I have the ones I have - don't know how I managed to get past the others in some of them.
i heard from Western Ontario
Anybody heard from U of MD Baltimore County?
yes on UMBC
Has anyone heard from Brown (econ/public policy) or from Harris School? If so, when?
baruch - yes this week.
anyone heard from UCL?

It may be some consolation to many of you sellers, that we received 400+ applications. If you spend two full days on a first pass, that averages out to just over 2 minutes per application.
So why not to admit fewer PhD students to these PhD programs???
I honestly think that many programs admit us to have cheap teachers for 4 years
"Baruch yes"
Did they call Monday or Tuesday?
What field are you (labor, public,...)?
6:22 nobody forced you to enter a phd program :-)
Nobody forced me, but admittedly ,my expectations were very different. The truth unfolded gradually
Anybody hear from U Colorado-Boulder, or Colorado State?
Friend of mine heard from Colorado-Boulder about 10 days ago
I heard from Colorado State on 12/12.
Anyone hear from Wake Forest?
Anyone knows whether Indiana Bloomington and Arizona moved yet?
SUNY Stony Brook anybody?
SUNY-SB made calls last week.
anyone got u of st. thomas? when?
University of Louisville (Econometrics/Health, not the IO position)?
Got St. Thomas early last week.
My friend heard from U of Maryland Baltimore about a week ago.
Has anyone gotten an interview with Portland State? I heard that their job search was a sham as they have two visiting professors doing exactly what they advertised for.
Portland State
Yeah, I notice that, and they had an early deadline (Nov. 1st?). I applied in October, and got a rejection letter today by e-mail.
Yes, I have an interview with Portland State and I'm not one of their visitors.
What is all this whining about too many PhD's. The Economics PhD market is one of the few non-hard science PhD markets that clears EVERY YEAR.
Don't count on those visitors at Portland being shoo-ins. In my experience they have some advantages and some disadvantages over other applicants.
I am speaking in general here I am not privy to any information about this particular search.
Just got an email from Florida State indicating they had just begun looking through apps. Probably not the case, as I know others have already received invitations. But FYI.

True enough to me. I think their interviews are only for the sake of being "An equal opportunity-affirmative action employer".
About wired jobs and a reason to not dispair.
Anyone hear from Wheaton College in MA?
Has anyone heard from U Virginia for the applied micro/experimental position? If yes, when?
When did University of Utah move?
11:12 yes on University of Louisville (Econometrics/Health, not the IO position), one week ago.
So Louisville has moved on both their positions?
Utah - sometime last week
Anyone heard anything about the University of South Carolina position?
I received two more interview requests for academic positions today, so there is still hope for the rest of you.... suckas.
8:54 - Congrats. Which schools?
